Possibility of Battlefield 1943 Modifications for PC

As Battlefield 1943 will not be cross-console capable, this opens the window for the possibility of official and third party modifications for the PC title.

Previous titles in the Battlefield series have shown that both official and unofficial modifications can be successful with users. Take for example battlefield 1942, there were a number of modifications available there and nearly all of them were embraced by users and seemed to extend the life of an outdated game.

With Battlefield 1943 being an arcade game at heart, I can see it doing with with those on consoles, however what about those of us that prefer to play on PC?

This is where modifications could be used to extend Battlefield 1943 into a game PC gamers really want to get into. As computers are generally more powerful than consoles there should be no issues with having increased amounts of files and file sizes.

There are even several routes Dice could take in relation to creating map modifications for Battlefield 1943 (PC version):

  • Dice could create more maps with larger player limits themselves, and distribute them for free.
  • Dice could create more maps with larger player limits themselves, and sell them to users on a pay-per-map basis.
  • Dice could allow third parties to create and distribute maps themselves.
  • Dice could allow third parties to create maps, which would then be sold in a Dice online store.

All of the above situations also leave the door open for more money to be made with map add-ons, which is able to help with costs arising from allowing them.

We should also not forget that Dice has stated that depending on the popularity of Battlefield 1943 there could be more content officially created for it.

So what do I see happening? Well personally I see the whole modification issue for Battlefield 1943 going in one of the following two ways.

  • Dice allows official add-on content for Battlefield 1943.
  • Third parties get a hook into the BF 1943 system and create their own unofficial add-on content.
